Captive Artist

Hello! My name is Murphy, and I have been incarcerated for a little over 20 years. I have been locked up since I was 17 years old. A lot of things contributed to me going to prison – lack of family and stability in my life, and all that I had learned or not learned from how I was raised, and my life experiences did not instill in me good decision making processes, a good moral compass, or the ability to think about the consequences of my actions or how they would affect others.

It is said that it is in humans to err, and I’ve been known to be one of those, and I’ve made more than my fair share of errors in my life. My past decision making processes caused me to make a lot of poor choices, and it was these poor choices that ultimately culminated in the worst decision I’ve ever made, that intrinsically changed my life from that point forward, and sent me to prison, where I thought until recently that I would spend the rest of my life.

Due to the Second Chance Bill, my Early Release Date has changed – it was 2042, but I am now eligible for parole as soon as May 2016, which is a Second Chance at life for me, that I never expected. I am hoping to use this Second Chance to become the man I should be, make the right choices, and work toward a better future for myself. One of the first things I plan on doing is furthering my education. I would like to become a heavy machine operator/mechanic, or diesel mechanic. I have already started the process to achieve these goals.

A little about me – I am 38 years old. I am an open and honest person, too much at times for some people, but I prefer to speak my mind. I’m kind of goofy, have a good sense of humor, and love to laugh. I’m a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type. I like knowing a little bit about everything, so I have many interests. I like almost anything science-related, and I like knowing how things are made, work, interact, etc…and that’s in pretty much all fields of science.

I’m an artist as well – I draw, paint, and sculpt. I don’t really do as much painting and sculpting as I’d like, but that has more to do with where I’m at, not for lack of want. Types of movies and books I like are Sci-Fi, horror, and comedy. Types of music I like are old and new Rock & Roll, Alternative, Country, and Classical.

A little bit about my art. Everything I make is made out of various types of paper. I am not allowed to have clay in here, so I had to figure out a way to sculpt using the materials I have access to, and I figured out a way to make a putty type of material out of toilet paper and wood glue. Using this putty I am able to make stuff I normally would not be able to. The materials I use include miscellaneous types and thicknesses of art paper, cardboard from the backs of writing tablets, and Q-tips and sucker sticks. Basically, I build a substructure of the basic shape of something I want to make, then using the putty layer by layer I build upon that structure to make the finished piece, then paint it with Acrylic or Watercolor paints. I make a lot of different kinds of things, sometimes I do requests for people who want to send something nice to their loved ones, sometimes I make stuff I’m interested in, or things others suggest, or just to see if I can.
