Halden Prison

Halden Prison is the second-largest prison in Norway, and was established in 2010 with a focus on rehabilitation; its design simulates life outside the prison. Praised for its humane conditions, Halden Prison has received the Arnstein Arneberg Award for its interior design in 2010 and been the subject of a documentary, “Cathedrals of Culture”.

The photographs shown here, and on display in Studio E at the 5th Avenue Theatre were taken as part of an artistic collaboration between the staff and inmates at Halden Prison – the series is called “Land Art”, and depicts various areas of the prison, as well as art created by the prisoners, including pieces of handcrafted porcelain from the Halden ceramics workshop.
